Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide services during the summer?

Yes. I provide services year-round. During the summer is a good time to regroup and prepare for what may be needed for the coming academic year, especially if your child is starting a transition year to middle school or high school.

Do consultants and/or advocates attend school meetings?

Yes. Special education meetings can be overwhelming, intimidating, and confusing. Parents may bring whomever they want as support.

Who makes up an IEP team?

As stated in the IDEA, a team must consist of a LEA (Local Educational Agency), a general education teacher, a special education teacher, and the parent. Although attendance of all related service providers is preferred for discussing the whole child, it is not required.

What is your experience with special education?

I have a degree in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and am licensed to teach students with learning disabilities. I held diverse positions throughout 30 years in instruction and as an Exceptional Children’s Case manager and Facilitator. I have experience with all 14 categories of disabilities recognized by the state of North Carolina.

Where are you located?

I am located in Forsyth County, NC, and am familiar with North Carolina policies and guidelines that are followed throughout the state. I have also consulted families in other states on the laws and rights of the IDEA.

Do you give legal advice?

No. I can educate you to enhance your understanding of the laws and rights under the IDEA. I am a non-attorney consultant and advocate, and I cannot provide legal advice. I can refer you to an attorney if needed.
